The Jack J. Valenti school of Communications is now encroaching on almost fifty years of consecutive teaching at the University of Houston. An astounding record of improving the educational prowess of its students, the Jack J. Valenti school is more than deserving of a facilities update. Other schools and departments of received new levels of funding, instructional development and new buildings. The Jack J. Valenti should have its turn next.

So what improvements should be made if the school got its chance to develop and expand further? First and foremost I believe that a building expansion should be done to allow communications programs to be centered at the school. For example the Houston Cougar is not based within the Jack J. Valenti school. It would be much better to have the paper within the school itself.

The second thing i would do is create an outreach department within the school. Communications is a vast field with thousands upon thousands of jobs and opportunities for students. So much that it may be hard for students within the school to find that key job the want. Thus the creation of an outreach department would be perfect for the school. It would serve the role of connecting students to future and prospecting employers and alleviate the stress many students have about the job market. 

With additional funding I would propose adding SmartBoards to every classroom within the Jack J. Valenti school. Communications is a field that has a deep tie to technology and has evolved heavily with things like the creation of the internet and computers. Corporations like META (formerly FaceBook) Are investing in a all digital future within a MetaVerse and virtual reality. Communications is on the cusp of a brand new evolution and a University like the University of Houston, they should have be preparing the students for that inevitable shift. Bringing in new technology that exposes Communications majors at the Jack J. Valenti school will be crucial for their sucesss in the ever evolving field of Communications.

Students views as the semesters end looms

  Nov 30 2021 Blog 9 Students and their favorites of the semester Brandon Bearden With the Fall 2021 semester finally coming to a close, I thought now would be the perfect opportunity to go around and ask individual students at the Jack J. Valenti School of Communications what their favorite moments / assignments / classes of the semester have been. Out of all the ups and downs of the semester, covid-19 hitting the start of the semester, etc. I was surprised that many students have a mostly positive view of this fall semester. Eric, a student of the Jack J. Valenti school said that he had a great semester, "most of my classes were easy,... all my professors were nice. It was pretty good.". Even with the start of the semester being hammered by covid with late starts, he still held a very positive view.
